NOT ANOTHER STIMULANT.
VKE provides D-BHB for brain + muscle — the same D-BHB your own liver makes, provided rapidly as an additional fuel. Fits a carb-fueled plan or a low-carb plan. The protocol changes, not the molecule.

FEWER CALORIES · TRAINING CAPACITY HELD
Four weeks on 30% fewer calories. On placebo, exercise capacity and resting metabolism dropped. With VKE, both held. Muscle mass was a separate job — higher protein preserved it, VKE did not.

EXTRA WAKEFULNESS · COUNTERACTED
A strenuous training day raised wakefulness after sleep onset by 95%. VKE post-training and pre-sleep counteracted it. Sleep efficiency +3%. Not a sleep drug — a fuel taken at a time that showed up on the polysomnograph.

Eat 30% less.
Keep training.
Cutting calories usually costs you in the gym. One human trial put athletes on 30% fewer calories for four weeks and measured what they lost — and what VKE kept.
PROTEIN HAS A JOB.
VKE HAS A DIFFERENT ONE.
- Placebo lost exercise capacity. VKE didn’t — capacity held on the same calorie deficit.
- Placebo’s resting metabolism slowed. Lean-mass-adjusted resting energy expenditure held with VKE.
- Stress measures improved with VKE through the deficit.
- Muscle mass was preserved by higher protein, not by VKE. Keep the protein.
HIROUX ET AL. 2023, FRONT PHYSIOL · PMID 36714318 · RESEARCH SERVINGS ARE NOT CONSUMER INSTRUCTIONS
A reduced-calorie camp is not the same thing as an aggressive dehydration cut. VKE is fuel — not a dehydration tool, not a fat burner, and not a substitute for protein or food. How it fits a make-weight plan is in the protocol.
VKE CAN SIGNAL MUSCLE.
IT STILL ISN’T PROTEIN.
In 36 healthy young men, VKE alone, 10 g of whey, and VKE + whey each raised myofibrillar protein synthesis above baseline — with no significant difference between them. Supporting evidence, not the point of this section.
In the calorie-restriction trial, protein — not VKE — preserved muscle mass. Keep the protein.

Some of the strongest VKE results came from using it after training and before sleep through a training block — not from one serving before competition.
Recovery here means sleep after strenuous training, the ability to absorb repeated work, and coming back for the next session. It does not mean soreness relief or faster repair of muscle damage — a trial tested that and found no effect. It is in the receipts.
Don’t wait until

The longest VKE training study to date ran eight weeks — the length of a camp. The lesson is not the number. It is the pattern: repeated use across the whole block.

Before competition, learn how VKE sits with your fueling. A carb-fueled session and a low-carb session are different contexts — find out which one you are in.
FIRST TIME = TRAINING. NEVER COMPETITION DAY.
It can fit a reduced-energy plan.
VKE can ride alongside a calorie-restricted camp. Protein still has its own job. VKE is not a protein replacement and not a weight-loss product.

Use what you tested in camp.
Carb-fueled: keep the carbs. Low-carb or fat-adapted: VKE can fit a lower-carbohydrate strategy. Post-weigh-in, rehydration, electrolytes and your established nutrition come first. VKE is additional fuel — not rehydration.
ONSET 15–20 MIN · PEAK ~60 MIN · FUEL ≠ HYDRATION
A short low-carb or fasted phase can lower scale weight partly through glycogen-associated water.
Lower carbohydrate intake can reduce stored glycogen, and glycogen is stored with water. Some of the resulting scale change can therefore be water, not a VKE effect. It also means sodium and electrolytes may matter more, not less.
Where VKE fits: as D-BHB energy through a low-calorie or fasted day, when the usual fuel isn’t on the menu. Test it in camp first.
After weigh-in: rehydration, electrolytes and your established nutrition come first. VKE is additional fuel, not rehydration.
This gets complicated fast, and we don’t publish dehydration-cut instructions. See the protocols or text 703-829-9411 with your specific goal.

Liquid courage
≠ ↑ performance.
R-1,3-butanediol — what’s in “ketone” products like Ketone-IQ — is metabolized through alcohol and aldehyde dehydrogenase pathways. That is not Veech Ketone Ester. It is a different molecule with a different use case.
Human butanediol research has reported euphoria, dizziness and gastrointestinal symptoms. Three published performance studies used Ketone-IQ itself: two found no performance benefit. The one positive paper was funded by HVMN and co-authored by HVMN’s Research Lead — the study our review takes apart. Earlier butanediol exercise trials also found no performance benefit. So no, a butanediol product does not get to borrow VKE performance claims just because both can raise BHB. Read “What’s Real vs. What’s Spin?” or compare the different ketones.

Four weeks on 30% fewer calories: capacity and resting metabolism held with VKE; muscle was preserved by protein.
HIROUX ET AL. 2023 · FRONT PHYSIOL · PMID 36714318PROTOCOL · WHAT HAPPENED · WHY IT MATTERS HERE · CONTEXT
PROTOCOL
- 32 female recreational athletes, 4 weeks, 30% energy restriction
- Three groups: placebo, increased protein (~2.0–2.2 g/kg/day), or VKE 3×20 g/day
- DXA body composition, indirect calorimetry, VO₂max test, appetite hormones, well-being questionnaires
WHAT HAPPENED
- Increased protein prevented muscle loss and maintained exercise capacity
- VKE did not change body composition — it did not preserve muscle mass
- VKE preserved exercise capacity vs placebo and prevented the placebo decline in lean-mass-adjusted resting energy expenditure
- Overall stress parameters improved with VKE
WHY IT MATTERS HERE
- The only trial that puts VKE in a deliberate reduced-energy state while training
- It splits the jobs cleanly: protein protects muscle, VKE rides alongside for capacity and energy expenditure
CONTEXT
- Female recreational athletes, not weight-class competitors
- Calorie restriction only — no dehydration or rapid weight-making component
- Molecule: (R)-3-hydroxybutyl (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate

VKE alone, 10 g whey, and both together each raised myofibrillar protein synthesis — no difference between them.
HANNAIAN ET AL. 2024 · AM J CLIN NUTR · PMID 38215886PROTOCOL · WHAT HAPPENED · WHY IT MATTERS HERE · CONTEXT
PROTOCOL
- 36 healthy young men, overnight-fasted, resting
- Ketone monoester 0.36 g/kg vs 10 g whey vs both; tracer-measured myofibrillar fractional synthesis rate over 5 h
WHAT HAPPENED
- All three treatments raised myofibrillar protein synthesis above basal
- No significant between-treatment difference
WHY IT MATTERS HERE
- Shows VKE is not inert to muscle — a supporting point under The Cut
CONTEXT
- Comparator was only 10 g whey, at rest, not after training
- Acute signaling is not the same as preserving muscle across a 4-week deficit — Hiroux answered that, and protein won

EVANS & EGAN 2018 · MED SCI SPORTS EXERC · PMID 29944604PROTOCOL · WHAT HAPPENED · WHY IT MATTERS HERE · CONTEXT
PROTOCOL
- 11 male team-sport athletes, crossover

WHAT HAPPENED
- Multitasking errors: +1.8 on carbohydrate alone vs 0.0 with the ester (p=0.017, d=0.70)
- Blood BHB 1.5–2.6 mM
- Reaction time, sustained attention, sprint times, heart rate, RPE and run time to exhaustion did not differ
WHY IT MATTERS HERE
- Repeated high-intensity intermittent work to exhaustion is the closest laboratory shape to rounds
- The measured difference was in errors under fatigue, not speed
CONTEXT
- Team-sport athletes, not fighters; running, not striking or grappling
- Physical performance measures were unchanged — reported plainly
NEVER READ AS: faster reactions, better fight IQ, or prevention of mistakes.

- 9 recreational soccer players, double-blind crossover
- 40-min mental-fatigue task, then 25 g ketone monoester or non-caloric placebo, then 45-min intermittent treadmill match
- Stroop and choice-reaction task performed during exercise
WHAT HAPPENED
- Choice-reaction correct answers fell 1.3% with KME vs 3.4% with placebo (p=0.02)
- Reaction time increased similarly in both conditions; Stroop did not differ
- Blood BHB ~1.6 mM; blood glucose and lactate lower with KME
WHY IT MATTERS HERE
- Fatigue was induced before the work began — closer to a late-round state than a fresh start
- Accuracy was what held
CONTEXT
- n=9, laboratory treadmill, placebo not energy-matched
- Molecule: (R)-3-hydroxybutyl (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate

WHAT HAPPENED
- Exercise cut REM sleep 26% and raised wakefulness after sleep onset 95% vs rest
- KE improved sleep efficiency 3% (p=0.040) and counteracted both the REM decrease and the wakefulness increase
WHY IT MATTERS HERE
- Camp is a sequence of strenuous days; sleep is the recovery lever you can actually move
CONTEXT
- Endurance athletes, not a fight camp
- The same group reports no benefit to already-good sleep on rest days — the effect is specific to exercise-disturbed sleep

- Power output in the final 30 min of a 2-h session was 15% higher
- The stress marker GDF15 rose ~2-fold more in control
WHY IT MATTERS HERE

- Relative VO₂peak, citrate synthase activity and OXPHOS complex II rose more in the KE group
- Peak cardiac output did not differ
WHY IT MATTERS HERE
- Eight weeks is a camp. The result came from daily repeated use across the whole block, not from a serving on test day

WHAT HAPPENED
- Ketone ester lowered blood pH and bicarbonate and reduced 30-min time-trial power
- Sprint time to exhaustion was ~64 s in both placebo and ketone ester — no difference
- Bicarbonate raised sprint time to exhaustion ~8% regardless of ketone ester
WHY IT MATTERS HERE
- This is the short, maximal shape of combat. One acute serving did not help it and hurt the longer effort
- It is why this page does not sell one-dose explosiveness

- Three servings of 11.5 g (R)-1,3-butanediol at 0, 30 and 60 min; BHB, GI symptoms and Stanford Sleepiness Scale over 5 h
WHAT HAPPENED
- Blood BHB peaked ~2.1 mM about an hour after the last serving
- No impact on measured sleepiness; generally well tolerated
WHY IT MATTERS HERE
- It keeps this page from overclaiming: butanediol is not automatically sedating. It is simply a different molecule
CONTEXT
- Open-label, no placebo; industry-affiliated authors
- Divided servings; single larger boluses in earlier work were where euphoria and dizziness appeared
NEVER READ AS: evidence about VKE. It is evidence about a different molecule.
Ketones for fighters, answered plainly.
Do ketones help MMA fighters?
Depends which ketone. The Veech Ketone Ester (VKE) has human evidence for holding cognitive accuracy under fatigue, for training-load and sleep during hard training blocks, and for exercise capacity during a reduced-energy period. None of it was an MMA trial, and other “ketones” are different molecules with different evidence. VKE is a food, not a dietary supplement.
Do ketones help boxers?
The relevant VKE evidence for a boxer is the same as for any combat athlete: fewer errors under exhaustive intermittent exercise, sleep after strenuous training, and higher sustainable training load across an overload block. No boxing trial exists yet. Nothing here claims harder punches or faster hands.
Are ketones useful for wrestling or BJJ?
Wrestling and grappling share the parts VKE has actually been measured on: repeated hard work, technique executed while tired, camps with reduced calories, and recovery between sessions. The evidence is adjacent — team-sport, endurance and calorie-restriction trials — not a wrestling or BJJ study.
Has VKE been studied directly in fighters?
Not yet. There is no definitive published VKE boxing, MMA, wrestling or grappling performance trial. Every result on this page is direct for the protocol it measured and adjacent for combat. We label which is which in the receipts.
How do I keep my energy up during fight camp?
Food first. Then consider adding VKE as another fuel. In an 8-week training study, VKE after sessions and before sleep produced higher time-trial power and larger mitochondrial adaptations than training alone. In a 3-week overload block it allowed 15% more sustainable training load. Repeated use across the block is the pattern behind both results.
How do I stay sharp late in a fight or match?
Fitness and preparation do most of it. What VKE has shown in human studies is holding cognitive accuracy under fatigue: zero added multitasking errors after exhaustive intermittent running versus +1.8 on carbohydrate alone, and a smaller drop in choice-reaction accuracy during a simulated match after induced mental fatigue. Speed did not change in those studies. Preserved under fatigue, not boosted from rest.
Can VKE help while I’m cutting calories?
Yes — this is one of the clearest combat-relevant results. In a 4-week trial on 30% fewer calories, exercise capacity and lean-mass-adjusted resting metabolism dropped on placebo and held with VKE, and stress measures improved. Muscle mass was preserved by higher protein, not by VKE. Read it as keep training while intake is down, with protein still doing its own job. Calorie restriction only — not a dehydration cut.
Does VKE help me lose weight?
No, but. VKE is not a fat burner and it does not create the calorie deficit — in the 4-week deficit trial it did not change body composition. It can fit a make-weight plan. VKE supplies D-BHB energy through a low-calorie or fasted day, and if you go low-carb or fasted to make weight, some of the scale loss can come from glycogen-associated water — which can make salt and electrolytes more important, not less. That water shift is not a VKE effect. It gets complicated fast: see the protocols or text us about your specific goal.
Does VKE preserve muscle during a cut?
Not on its own. In the 4-week deficit trial, higher protein preserved muscle mass and VKE did not. But VKE is not inert to muscle: it stimulated myofibrillar protein synthesis in humans, and post-exercise VKE raised mTORC1 signaling in a recovery study. So it can support a muscle-preservation strategy — alongside protein and training, never instead of them. Protein supplies the material. Training supplies the stimulus. VKE supplies fuel and a signal.
Does VKE replace protein?
No. VKE can stimulate muscle protein synthesis acutely, but in a 4-week deficit it was protein, not VKE, that protected muscle. VKE is another fuel. Protein is protein.
What should I take before sparring?
Whatever you have already tested in training. If you are adding VKE, the first time is a training session, never a competition. Amounts and timing are on the VKE protocol page. Onset is about 15–20 minutes; peak is around 60 minutes.
Should I use VKE during an 8-week fight camp?
That is where we recommend it: built into the full training block, not introduced in fight week. The longest VKE training study ran 8 weeks with post-training and pre-sleep use and produced higher time-trial power and larger mitochondrial adaptations. Test the protocol in training; exact amounts live on the VKE protocol page.
Why use VKE after training or before bed?
Recovery is key. Because that is where the strongest repeated-use results came from. After a strenuous training day, VKE post-exercise and pre-sleep improved sleep efficiency 3% and counteracted the exercise-induced rise in wakefulness and drop in REM sleep. The 3-week overload and 8-week training studies used the same window. No added caffeine to complicate an evening.
Can I use VKE after weigh-in?
Yes, if you tested it in camp. Post-weigh-in, rehydration, salt and electrolytes and your established nutrition come first; VKE layers in as additional fuel. If you went low-carb or fasted to make weight, remember some of that scale loss was glycogen-bound water, so electrolyte needs may be higher than usual. VKE is not rehydration and not a dehydration tool. See the protocols or text us with your specific goal.
Does VKE replace carbs?
No. If carbohydrate is part of your plan, keep it. VKE is an additional fuel that sits alongside carbohydrate, not a replacement for it.
Do I have to take VKE with carbs?
No. The cognition-under-fatigue trial paired VKE with carbohydrate; the sleep, overload and 8-week training studies did not require it. Your fueling strategy changes the protocol. It doesn’t change the molecule.
Can low-carb or fat-adapted fighters use VKE?
Yes. VKE is an ideal fit for a lower-carbohydrate strategy: it provides D-BHB energy directly rather than relying on your own ketone production. Test it in training first, like anything else.
Does VKE replace electrolytes?
No. Fuel is not hydration. Low-carb or fasted phases shift water and sodium, so salt and electrolytes may matter more, not less. VKE is not a cramp product and is not a rehydration tool.
Can I take VKE with caffeine?
You can, but treat the caffeine as a stimulant with its own dose and timing. In a 2026 mental-fatigue study, the ketone monoester plus caffeine produced the largest effect — task-switching about 97 ms quicker than placebo — while VKE alone prevented the decline seen on placebo. That is a reported lab condition, not a recommendation; caffeine is not part of the KetoneAid protocol. Warning: for some people caffeine hits harder alongside VKE — more jitters, a bigger crash, and disrupted sleep if it is taken late. Test the pairing in training, not fight week, and keep it out of the evening. VKE contains no caffeine and does not need it.
Does VKE increase punching power?
Nobody has measured it, so nobody gets to say yes or no. What has been measured is adjacent: one pre-exercise serving did not change a ~1-minute all-out sprint and lowered power over a 30-minute time trial, while repeated post-training use across 8 weeks raised time-trial power. So the case is not a one-dose power spike. It is holding execution under fatigue, another fuel when calories are low, recovery, and training with it across camp — the things that decide whether the power you already have is still there in the late rounds.
Is VKE allowed in competition?
Yes. VKE is not listed on the 2026 WADA Prohibited List, and all KetoneAid products are independently batch tested for substances prohibited under anti-doping rules. Athletes remain responsible for checking their event or federation’s current rules.
Are all KetoneAid products WADA tested?
Yes. All KetoneAid products are 3rd-party batch tested for WADA-prohibited substances. Batch testing is testing, not approval or certification by any anti-doping body, and athletes should confirm their own event or federation rules.
Which KetoneAid product should a fighter start with?
Ke4 if you want the most VKE in the fewest bottles and are tough enough to handle the most potent taste. Ke2 for multi-serving camp use, more diluted and easier to drink. Ketone Shot for the gym bag, tournament days or the lowest-friction first try. All three are the same Veech Ketone Ester at different dilutions.
Do other types of ketones have the same evidence?
No. These results belong to VKE.
Every result cited on this page comes from the Veech Ketone Ester / D-BHB ketone monoester actually studied.
R-1,3-butanediol, ketone salts, D-BHB free acid and other ketone esters are different molecules or formulations and generally lack positive performance outcomes.
They do not inherit VKE’s results.
If a brand sells a different molecule while citing VKE research, that research is evidence for VKE — not for what they’re selling.
Check the molecule. Different ketones, different results. COMPARE THE KETONES →
What is R-1,3-butanediol — and will it get me buzzed?
A diol alcohol the liver converts toward BHB — a ketone precursor, not a ketone — through alcohol and aldehyde dehydrogenase pathways. And yes, like alcohol, it can get you buzzed: human research has reported euphoria and dizziness, and Hard Ketones sells the same R-1,3-butanediol on purpose as a Real Buzz. No Booze. inebriating alternative to alcohol. As with a drink, a small amount may not register and people respond differently, but the effect is real and it is the point of that molecule.
What doesn’t change is that it is a different molecule from the Veech Ketone Ester, with different kinetics and its own evidence, and VKE results do not transfer to it. Read “What’s Real vs. What’s Spin?”
Are ketones one of the best MMA, boxing or wrestling supplements?
Veech Ketone Ester is a food, not a dietary supplement. Judged on human evidence, VKE has measured results for cognition under fatigue, sleep after strenuous training, sustainable training load and exercise capacity during calorie restriction — all adjacent to combat, none from a fight trial. Other products sold as “ketones” are different molecules and do not carry that evidence.
