Not every ketone drink is appropriate for moto.
Some ketone drinks are made with R 1,3-butanediol. It’s an alcohol, and is inebriating. Do not ride impaired.
Some ketone brands wrongly market it for focus and performance. There is no credible evidence to support this and they often point to VKE results as their “science-backed” evidence. R 1,3 does not do the same thing. It’s the ingredient in our own Hard Ketones – Real Buzz No Booze – alcohol alternatives. A ketone meter can show the same reading from these drinks as from VKE. BUT, Different Ketone, Different Results.
- Don’t drink Hard Ketones/R 1,3 before you ride.

What’s actually been measured.
No VKE study has tested motocross. These are the human studies of this molecule, (R)-3-hydroxybutyl (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate, that the claims above lean on. Protocol, result, why it matters, and where it stops.

PROTOCOL
- 25 healthy adults (20 men, 5 women), double-blind randomized crossover.
- Three arms: Ke4, placebo, Ke4 with caffeine.
- Cognitive battery (task-switching, Stroop) before and after a 20-minute mental-fatigue task.
- Ke4 serving scaled to body weight.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Task-switching reaction time, group means before → after: placebo 956 → 1,041 ms; Ke4 957 → 922 ms; Ke4 + caffeine 993 → 864 ms.
- Ke4 vs placebo favoured Ke4. Ke4’s own before-to-after change was not statistically significant.
- Perceived fatigue roughly doubled in all arms.
WHY IT MATTERS
- Motocross asks for decisions at a high heart rate, lap after lap. This is a direct measure of staying quick while mentally tired.
- The molecule in the study is the molecule in the bottle.
CONTEXT
- A seated lab test of attention, not a riding test. Nobody measured lap times.
- The caffeine arm is reported because the study measured it. Caffeine is not part of the KetoneAid protocol.
- Values are the group means reported in Table 1.

PROTOCOL
- 11 male team-sport athletes.
- Intermittent shuttle running to exhaustion.
- Carbohydrate alone vs carbohydrate plus the ketone ester, at 750 mg of ketone ester per kg of body weight.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Multitasking errors late in the test: +1.8 on carbohydrate alone, 0.0 with the ester.
- No difference in reaction time, sprint times or total run time.
WHY IT MATTERS
- The closest published analog to a moto: repeated high-intensity efforts with decisions to make while gassed.
- The brain kept doing the complex task. Sprint and run times didn’t change.
CONTEXT
- Running, not riding. Field athletes, not motocross riders.
- Nothing measured on a bike.

PROTOCOL
- Trained athletes, placebo-controlled crossover.
- A strenuous training day, then the ketone ester after exercise and 30 minutes before bed.
- Sleep measured overnight.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Sleep efficiency improved versus placebo.
- The usual post-exertion drop in REM sleep was counteracted.
WHY IT MATTERS

CONTEXT
- Measured sleep, not next-day lap times.

PROTOCOL
- 28 trained men enrolled (13 + 13 analysed), placebo-controlled.

Every study on this page used one molecule: the Veech Ketone Ester, (R)-3-hydroxybutyl (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate, developed by Dr. Richard Veech and Todd King at NIH. Ketone salts, butanediol and other esters are different molecules with different research. A blood ketone reading is not a result; the studies are.
Ketone ester and motocross.
Is ketone ester legal in motocross racing?
Veech Ketone Ester (VKE) is not listed on the current WADA Prohibited List, and all KetoneAid products are third-party batch tested for WADA-prohibited substances. Sanctioning bodies and series publish their own rules and testing programs, so check the current rules for the series you race before you use anything, and keep your batch documentation.
What does ketone ester do for a motocross rider?
VKE provides D-BHB, the same ketone your own liver makes, as an additional fuel for your brain and your muscles. In human studies of this molecule, it kept reaction time from slowing under mental fatigue, cut multitasking errors late in exhausting stop-start exercise, improved sleep efficiency after a strenuous day, and, over 8 weeks of training, came with about 4% more power than placebo. These results belong to Veech Ketone Ester and do not apply to any other ketone/ non VKE company claiming these results.
When should I take VKE on a race day?
Take your product-specific serving of VKE before you ride, again after you’re done riding for the day, and again before bed. Amounts and timing for Ke4, Ke2 and Ketone Shot are on the protocol page. Try it first at practice or a track day, never for the first time on race day.
Is VKE a stimulant? Does it have caffeine?
No. VKE is a food that provides D-BHB, the ketone your own liver makes; it is not a stimulant and it does not need one. Potency varies by product, so read the label of the one you choose. One study of this ketone ester also tested it with caffeine added, and that arm was faster from a slower baseline. Caffeine is not part of the KetoneAid protocol.
Can I drink a ketone drink before riding?
Check the label first. VKE is a food that provides D-BHB, and riders take it before they ride. Some ketone drinks are made with R 1,3-butanediol, an alcohol ketone precursor that can be inebriating; KetoneAid’s own Hard Ketones uses it on purpose for the buzz effect. Don’t drink a butanediol product or Hard Ketones before you ride, and never ride impaired.
What if I don’t feel a difference with VKE?
Follow our protocols. If you don’t feel it, reach out and we’ll help you hone in on how to use it for your specific case. If you’re still not satisfied we offer a money-back guarantee.
Do I still eat and drink water when I use VKE?
Yes. VKE is an additional fuel, not a replacement for food or water. Keep your normal race-day eating and your normal hydration. Take your product-specific serving of VKE alongside them.
Is VKE a supplement?
VKE is a food, not a dietary supplement. The Veech Ketone Ester is (R)-3-hydroxybutyl (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate, a molecule your body digests into D-BHB, the ketone your liver already makes. It is sold and labelled as a food.
Will VKE help with soreness after riding?
There is no direct study (yet) showing VKE provides faster relief of soreness, and one study of this ketone ester found no difference. What has been measured is sleep: in athletes, VKE after a strenuous day and before bed improved sleep efficiency and counteracted the drop in REM sleep. World Tour cycling teams, including Soudal Quick-Step, build KetoneAid into their recovery after race stages.
Which KetoneAid product should a rider start with?
Ketone Shot is 8% VKE, ready to drink and the easiest way to try it. Ke2 is 25% VKE with the best balance of value and taste. Ke4 is 50% VKE, the most concentrated and the strongest tasting. All three are the same Veech Ketone Ester at different dilutions; concentration decides taste, not the molecule.
