Across a season of the five major European leagues, 21.7% of goals came in minutes 76–90 — more than any other 15-minute period. In a separate Champions League study, players covered less total distance and high-intensity running in the final 15 than in the opening 15.
Separate datasets, so no causation claims. The point is simple: the decisive minutes are the hardest ones to stay sharp for. That's what the FOCUS claim is about.

What's actually been measured.
Nobody has run a Veech Ketone Ester trial in a soccer match yet. The closest evidence: exhausting, stop-start intermittent running in team-sport athletes, with the thinking tested before and after. That's the anchor study below.
EXTRA MULTITASKING ERRORS AFTER EXHAUSTING INTERMITTENT RUNNING
Team-sport athletes ran an exhausting intermittent shuttle protocol — soccer's shape of effort — with carbohydrate alone or carbohydrate plus VKE. Afterward, multitasking errors rose with carbohydrate alone and didn't rise with VKE. Reaction time and sustained attention didn't differ.
EVANS & EGAN 2018 · MSSE · PMID 29944604
CIRCULATING DOPAMINE · ALERTNESS MAINTAINED · LONG EFFORT
Across a 60–100km ultra-endurance event, VKE roughly doubled circulating dopamine and mental alertness was maintained where it declined in control. Ultra-runners, not soccer players — the relevant variable is hours of effort with a job to do.
POFFÉ ET AL. 2023 · J APPL PHYSIOL · PMID 37141424
PROTECTED AFTER A STRENUOUS DAY · SLEEP EFFICIENCY IMPROVED
After a deliberately hard training day, athletes taking VKE after exercise and before sleep had better sleep efficiency, and the usual post-exercise decline in REM sleep was counteracted. That's the full-time dose, and the next-match argument.
ROBBERECHTS ET AL. 2023 · MSSE · PMID 37259248
Where we draw the line. The measured pattern is judgement and alertness held under fatigue, not a boost from rest — and none of it was measured in a soccer match. We name the extrapolations instead of hiding them, and results with any ketone product are protocol-specific: dose, timing, fuel context and metabolic state all move the outcome. The receipts below include two studies of the same molecule that disagree, and why. All the receipts →

The research behind the soccer page.
None of these were run in a soccer match. Each was chosen because it measures something a soccer player spends: judgement under fatigue, alertness across a long effort, and recovery when the next match is close. The last entry shows two studies of the same molecule disagreeing — and why that's the point.
After exhausting intermittent running: no rise in multitasking errors with VKE; errors rose with carbohydrate alone.

PROTOCOL Dublin City University. Eleven male team-sport athletes completed the Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test twice: five 15-minute blocks of intermittent shuttle running designed to mimic team-sport match play, then a shuttle run to exhaustion. A 6.4% carbohydrate drink was taken before and during, either alone or with 750 mg/kg of the ketone monoester. A cognitive battery ran before and after. The ketone monoester used was KetoneAid Ke4.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Blood D-BHB reached roughly 1.5–2.6 mM during exercise with the ester.
- Incorrect responses on a multitasking test rose from pre- to post-exercise with carbohydrate alone (mean +1.8) but not with the ester (0.0); p = 0.017, d = 0.70.
- Reaction time and sustained attention did not differ between conditions.
- Sprint times, heart rate, perceived exertion and run time to exhaustion did not differ between conditions.
WHY IT MATTERS FOR SOCCER
- The protocol is soccer's shape of effort: repeated walk–jog–sprint cycles to exhaustion.
- The effect was on executive function after the body was spent — the pass you pick in the 85th, not the sprint you make in the 5th.
- Both arms had carbohydrate. VKE rode alongside normal fuelling, the way we recommend using it.

PROTOCOL KU Leuven. Ultra-runners completed a 60–100km event with ketone monoester or control, with alertness and circulating dopamine measured across the effort.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Circulating dopamine roughly doubled with the ester.
- Mental alertness was maintained where it declined in control.
WHY IT MATTERS FOR SOCCER
- The relevant variable is sustained effort with a job to do. A match plus warm-up is a long evening of exactly that.
- Alertness late in the effort is the last-fifteen question in another sport's clothing.

PROTOCOL KU Leuven. Athletes completed a strenuous training day with ketone monoester or placebo taken after training and before sleep, with sleep measured overnight.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Sleep efficiency improved with the ester.
- The decline in REM sleep after strenuous exercise was counteracted.
WHY IT MATTERS FOR SOCCER
- This is the full-time dose. A night match leaves you wired at midnight; sleep is where the legs come back.
- Congested weeks make recovery the difference between three matches and three good matches.

WHAT IT IS Duke researchers studied low-dose KetoneAid Ke4 in college basketball players during a demanding competition schedule. The ASPEN 2024 abstract reported higher overnight muscle fuel scores, measured by MuscleSound ultrasound Fuel-Score, after ketone monoester use.
WHY IT'S HERE
- Team-sport athletes, in season, on the actual product — the closest real-world setting to a fixture week anywhere in this list.
- Overnight muscle fuel is the next-match question, asked directly.
WHAT IT ISN'T
- A conference abstract, not a peer-reviewed full paper. An ultrasound fuel score, not a biopsy.
- Basketball, not soccer. We label it exactly what it is and weight it accordingly.
CONTEXT: “Low dose ketone monoester (KME) augments intramuscular glycogen syntheses overnight in college basketball players.” ASPEN 2024 conference abstract.

Evidence, not a recommendation · PMID 42429835
PROTOCOL Participants completed a mental-fatigue protocol under ketone monoester alone, ketone monoester with caffeine, and placebo, with cognitive testing including a task-switching measure.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Task-switching was 97 ms quicker in the monoester-plus-caffeine condition than with placebo — the largest effect in the study.
- The monoester alone primarily prevented the decline seen with placebo rather than producing a gain from rest.
WHY WE DON'T PUT CAFFEINE IN THE PROTOCOL
- Most players already have a caffeine routine; if that's you, this study is worth knowing when you evaluate your own protocol.
- Late caffeine brings jitters, a crash and sleep disruption — and sleep is half our recovery argument. Evening kickoffs make that trade worse.
CONTEXT: Laboratory mental-fatigue task, not sport. Interesting evidence, not a recommendation to add caffeine. PMID 42429835 — PubMed

Holdsworth et al. 2017 (PMID 28398950) vs Vandoorne et al. 2017 (PMID 28588499)
Why protocol details decide outcomes
THE PAIR Two 2017 human trials gave athletes the same ketone monoester after glycogen-depleting exercise and measured muscle glycogen. They disagree — and the disagreement is the lesson.
HOLDSWORTH 2017 · MSSE
- Twelve well-trained males; after the ester, glucose was held constantly high for two hours with a hyperglycemic clamp.
- Glucose uptake was 32% faster, and muscle glycogen was 50% higher than control (246 vs 164 mmol/kg dry weight).
VANDOORNE 2017 · FRONT PHYSIOL
- Eight trained males; the ester was added to a normal protein/carbohydrate recovery drink over five hours.
- Glycogen resynthesis didn't differ — but mTORC1 signalling, tied to muscle protein synthesis, was higher.
THE POINT: With glucose held plentiful and constant, the ester amplified glycogen storage. With a standard recovery drink, it didn't — the fuel context changed the outcome. That's why timing, dose and what you take it with are the difference between a result and a shrug, and why we publish protocols instead of promises. Holdsworth · Vandoorne
Ketones and soccer
How do I stop fading in the second half of a soccer match?
Second-half fade is usually several problems wearing one shirt: fuel, hydration, pacing and a head that's been working for an hour. The fixes stack: eat a proper meal a few hours before kickoff, use halftime to actually refuel instead of just standing there, keep water and electrolytes going, and don't sprint the first twenty like the match ends at the half.
Veech Ketone Ester is the fuel part. It's a food that provides D-BHB rapidly — a fuel your muscles and brain use — taken pre-match and at halftime alongside your normal carbohydrates, not instead of them.
How do soccer players stay focused for 90 minutes?
Focus over a full match is mostly managed, not summoned: a settled pre-match routine, a real halftime reset, talking constantly so you're processing the game instead of drifting, and fuel — because the brain runs on it like everything else, and judgement is the first thing an under-fuelled brain gives up.
The measured evidence for VKE sits exactly there: in team-sport athletes, multitasking errors rose after exhausting intermittent running with carbohydrate alone and didn't rise with VKE alongside it.
What should I drink at halftime?
Water for hydration — with electrolytes in heat or if you're a heavy sweater — plus whatever match fuel already works for you, and VKE alongside it; it contains no caffeine.
How do I recover between soccer matches?
The basics carry most of the load: eat carbohydrate and protein soon after the match, rehydrate, and protect sleep — especially after night matches, when you're home at midnight and wired. Light movement the next day beats the couch.
VKE's role is the full-time dose. After a strenuous day, athletes taking it after exercise and before sleep had better sleep efficiency, and the usual post-exercise drop in REM sleep was counteracted. That was endurance athletes, not a fixture week — but sleep is where the legs come back regardless of sport.
How long does it take to recover from a soccer match?
The soccer literature generally puts full neuromuscular recovery after a competitive match at up to a few days, depending on the player, the match load and what you do about it. Which is exactly the problem with a Saturday–Wednesday–Saturday week: the fixture list doesn't wait for the muscle soreness to.
You can't shortcut the biology, but you can stop sabotaging it: refuel promptly, rehydrate, sleep properly, and keep the day-after session genuinely light.
How do I play two matches close together?
Treat the gap between matches as its own event. Refuel within the first hour after match one, rehydrate with electrolytes, get off your feet, and eat a normal meal if there's time for it to settle. Then run the pre-match protocol again before the second: VKE about 30 minutes before kickoff, and again at halftime.
The full-time dose after the last match of the day is the recovery play for tomorrow.
What should I eat before a soccer match?
What already works for you: a carbohydrate-forward meal roughly three hours out, familiar foods, nothing you're testing for the first time on a match day. VKE doesn't change any of that — it's taken about 30 minutes before kickoff alongside your normal pre-match eating, not as a replacement for it.
Do I still need electrolytes with VKE?
Yes. Fuel and hydration are different jobs. VKE is fuel; it is not an electrolyte drink and it doesn't replace water or sodium — especially in heat, in extra time, and across tournament weekends. Keep whatever hydration plan works for you and add VKE to it. And if cramp is your problem, look at hydration and conditioning: VKE is not a cramp product, and we won't pretend otherwise.
Can I use VKE with caffeine?
You can, and one study is worth knowing: in a mental-fatigue trial, the largest task-switching improvement came from VKE plus caffeine, while VKE alone primarily prevented the decline placebo showed. That's interesting evidence — not a recommendation to add caffeine.
We deliberately keep caffeine out of the soccer protocol. Many players already have their own caffeine routine, and adding more brings jitters, a crash, and sleep disruption — a bad trade after an evening kickoff, when sleep is where your recovery happens. If caffeine is already part of your match day, you now know what the research found. If it isn't, VKE doesn't need it.
Can ketones help soccer players?
Here's what's measured and what isn't. In team-sport athletes doing exhausting intermittent running, multitasking errors rose afterward with carbohydrate alone and didn't rise with the Veech Ketone Ester alongside it. In long efforts, alertness was maintained and circulating dopamine roughly doubled. After hard days, sleep efficiency improved and REM sleep was protected. None of this was measured in a soccer match, and we say so.
One more thing that matters: those results are from the Veech Ketone Ester specifically. Other "ketone" products — R 1,3 butanediol, ketone salts, other esters — are different molecules, and results don't transfer between them.
When should I use VKE before or during a match?
About 30 minutes before kickoff, then again at halftime. If the match can go to extra time, the break before it is a legitimate top-up point. One more at full time for recovery. First time, use a training session rather than a match, and find your timing before it counts.
What about extra time?
Extra time is thirty more minutes played entirely in last-fifteen conditions — maximum accumulated load, maximum consequence. As timing, the break before extra time works like a second halftime: VKE, water alongside. We make no claims about shootouts, and anyone who does is selling you something they can't back.
How do goalkeepers stay focused when they're not busy?
The keepers who stay sharp treat quiet spells as work: constant talking, re-setting position with every phase, tracking the shape of the attack so the moment never arrives cold. Concentration through nothing is the position's actual skill.
Fuel is part of it — the brain doesn't idle for free. VKE provides D-BHB, a fuel the brain can use, without relying on a stimulant. No goalkeeper-specific VKE trial yet; the relevant evidence is decision-making under fatigue in team-sport athletes, and we make no claims about saves or reactions.
Are soccer supplements worth it? Is VKE one?
If you're searching "soccer supplements," most of what you'll find is pills and powders of varying evidence quality. VKE isn't in that category: Veech Ketone Ester is a food, not a dietary supplement — a drinkable fuel with human research on the specific molecule. Judge it the way you'd judge any food you use around a match: by what's measured, and by how it performs for you in training before you trust it in a fixture.
Is VKE allowed in competition?
Veech Ketone Ester is a food, not a drug and not a dietary supplement. VKE is not listed on the 2026 WADA Prohibited List, and selected KetoneAid products are independently batch tested for substances prohibited under anti-doping rules. Athletes remain responsible for what they consume — check the current rules of your league, federation or event, and the current batch documentation for the product you intend to use.
