WHAT VKE DOES ON THE MOUNTAIN

1 Fuel. 4 Jobs.

One molecule. Your brain and your muscles both burn it.

FOCUS Stay sharp when the legs get tired.

Read the line and execute it. Sharper when it matters: 2 p.m. on the third day, when most people start making dumb mistakes.

PROOF: Reaction time held on VKE while placebo got 9% slower. Roca 2026 · see the chart ↓

FLOW Locked in.

In the moment. Alert and present. Not wired, not foggy, not thinking about lunch.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY: Quiet and alert focus. More chill than caffeine.

STAMINA Ski longer.

Noticeable leg endurance, guaranteed. D-BHB is the same emergency fuel your body makes to keep you sharp when there’s no food coming in. Now you drink it, without starving your body into making it.

WHAT IT PROVIDES: D-BHB – the same emergency superfuel your body makes when fasting.

RECOVERY Legs for day three.

After a hard day, VKE helps refuel your muscles and improves sleep – including the sleep you don’t get well at altitude.

HOW IT FEELS, NOT TRIAL RESULTS

More Energy
= More Fun

Caffeine will let you down.
VKE is real energy now, on-demand.

People describe it as being focused, alert and present on the hill – enhanced flow. No jitters or crash like caffeinated energy drinks. Just clean energy and clarity.

Still want your coffee? Keep it. In a human study, Ke4 plus caffeine was sharper than Ke4 alone – and placebo got slower.

TOMORROW’S FIRST CHAIR

First tracks don’t wait
for you to recover.
Be ready tomorrow.

Larger amount when you get off the hill to refuel. Small amount before bed to recharge.

Shot legs on day 2 or 3 are a bummer. In athletes, VKE after a strenuous day improved sleep efficiency and counteracted the REM drop – sleep is where your next day starts.

No added caffeine to complicate a 6 a.m. alarm.

THE ORIGIN

Built for DARPA.

Made to enhance soldiers’ performance when it matters most.

In 2003, DARPA’s Metabolic Dominance program went looking for a food that would hold off fatigue and keep soldiers’ physical and mental performance up through days of intense operations. It funded Dr. Richard Veech’s lab at the National Institutes of Health to build it. The result was the Veech Ketone Ester.

Same molecule. Now it’s in your jacket pocket.

LOW-OXYGEN SCIENCE

Does more with less oxygen.
Tested in thin air.

Ketones are an oxygen-efficient fuel. In Richard Veech’s lab, hearts running on ketones did more work per unit of oxygen. Then researchers put people in thin air to see what happens in a whole body.

Two 2024 trials. 16 military personnel breathed air matching 20,000 ft (6,096 m) through a mask for 20 minutes – first at rest, then during a weighted ruck. On VKE, blood-oxygen saturation dropped less than on placebo: about 6 points at rest, 2.4–4.2% on the ruck. At rest, thinking speed dropped less too. Your resort tops out around 10,000–13,000 ft; the test was thinner than anything with a chairlift.

Not medicine. If you feel unwell up high, go down.

WHAT IT DIDN’T DO

No thinking-speed difference during exercise. No endurance gain in a cycling-in-thin-air study. At simulated altitude, oxygen held but sleep and performance didn’t improve.

WHEN TO TAKE IT

Before first chair. Between runs. Before bed.

Keep it simple. Amounts for each product and goal are on the protocols page.

BEFOREIN THE PARKING LOT
BETWEENEVERY COUPLE OF HOURS
AFTEROFF THE HILL
BEDA SMALL AMOUNT
BEFORE FIRST CHAIR

When you’re booting up.

It kicks in around 15 minutes. Take it in the parking lot, before the lodge coffee. Eat when you’d normally eat – best results come a couple hours away from a meal.

BETWEEN RUNS

Lunch is for people who aren’t skiing.

Take it again every couple of hours depending on how hard you’re going. It’s fuel – the harder you go, the more you burn. Ke4 fits in a jacket pocket and doesn’t freeze solid like a bar.

AFTER

A larger amount when you’re off the hill.

Take it as soon as you’re done for the day. That’s the recovery dose, and it pairs with a small amount before bed.

BED

Rest starts at bedtime.

Take a small amount right before bed. In athletes, VKE after a strenuous day and before bed improved sleep efficiency and counteracted the drop in REM sleep.

FIRST TIME? GROOMERS, NOT A BACKCOUNTRY DAY. FIND YOUR DOSE WHERE A MISTAKE IS CHEAP.

VKE IS FUEL – NOT REHYDRATION. ALTITUDE DRIES YOU OUT. DRINK WATER.

More isn’t better. In the dose study, tripling the dose doubled blood ketones but didn’t increase the amount of ketone the body actually used – the measured gain came at the lower dose. Start low and work your way up to find the optimal VKE dose for you. See why →

FOR BEST RESULTS

Give it 8 weeks.

One day tells you how it feels. A full season shows you what you’re really capable of.

In trained athletes, 8 weeks of VKE after training and before bed came with about 4% more power than placebo. Measured in cyclists, not on snow. But power output is power output. 4% may not sound like a lot, but it is – the difference that makes a difference.

DIFFERENT KETONES, DIFFERENT RESULTS.

Comes Close.

Every study on this page used one molecule: the Veech Ketone Ester, developed by Dr. Richard Veech and Todd King at NIH. Ketone salts, butanediol and other esters are different molecules with different research and lack the focus + performance results of VKE. A blood ketone reading is not the same as a result.

R 1,3-butanediol has inebriating sedative-like effects. It’s a great alcohol alternative, but not something you want on the hill. That’s why we use it in our own Hard Ketones Real Buzz. No Booze.™ line, and why it never goes in your jacket pocket.

QUESTIONS

Ketone ester for skiing and snowboarding.

Does ketone ester help with skiing or snowboarding?

It’s superfuel. It won’t magically make you shred. Used alongside training, it should help you improve faster though. Train, recover, repeat – in an 8-week training study, the ketone ester group gained more power than placebo. VKE provides D-BHB, the same ketone your own liver makes, and your brain and muscles burn it. Primarily used for focus, flow, stamina and recovery, so you can ski more and have more fun doing it. The human studies are on this page; there’s no skiing trial yet, and these findings concern Veech Ketone Ester, not other ketone molecules. No other ketone comes close.

When do I take ketone ester for a ski day?

You should feel it in about 15 minutes. Take more every couple of hours on a big day. After, and a small amount before bed for recovery. It is fuel – the harder you go the more you burn, but more ≠ better. Take what you’ll use, ideally a couple hours away from food for best results. Several protocols exist; amounts for each product and goal are on the protocols page.

Does it help at altitude?

Yes, it should. In two human studies breathing thin air through a mask (equal to 20,000 ft), blood-oxygen saturation dropped less on VKE than on placebo, and at rest thinking speed held up better. If it doesn’t, we’ll help you tweak how you take it. If it still doesn’t work for you, we offer a risk-free money-back guarantee.

What hasn’t ketone ester done in thin-air studies?

Plenty, and you should hear it from us. At real resort altitudes the field studies are flat: at a US Army mountaineering school (7,500 to 13,600 ft, two full training days) ketone monoester gave no physical or cognitive benefit over placebo (Miyatsu 2024). At 3,375 m over three days it didn’t improve oxygenation, oxygen uptake or efficiency (Tominec 2025, 2026). At 4,000 m simulated it blunted high-intensity exercise performance and didn’t change thinking (Stalmans 2025), and the same group reports ketone ester can slow short, all-out efforts at sea level too. In the 20,000 ft mask trials, thinking speed during exercise was the same on VKE and placebo. What held up: a smaller blood-oxygen drop and steadier thinking at rest in very thin air, plus the focus, sleep and 8-week power results from sea-level studies. Not medicine. If you feel unwell up high, go down.

Will it freeze in my pocket?

Ke4 and Ke2 are mostly ester and water, so they get thick in the cold but stay pourable at normal ski-day temperatures; an inside pocket keeps them fine.

How does ketone ester feel?

Calm, alert energy: present and switched on, not wired. It isn’t a stimulant, so there’s no caffeine-style buzz, jitters or crash. Effects vary from person to person, so try it on a normal day first. Learn how it feels and find your dose before a big day or competition.

Does it help with recovery when my legs are shot?

Yes. Some of the most elite endurance athletes in the world use it for recovery – KetoneAid sponsors two Tour de France teams with product, not cash, because they actually use it. The measured ones: after a strenuous day, VKE improved sleep efficiency and counteracted the drop in REM sleep in exercised athletes, and with carbs after exercise, muscle glycogen refilled about 50% faster in one study. If you want legs for day three, that’s what matters.

Does ketone ester taste bad?

The Ke4 flavor is called Very Scary 🍒 for a reason. It’s strong and bitter with a cough syrup-like taste. Ke2 is three times the water of Ke4 at the same price per gram – we named it “Not Bad” 🍏 and mean it. Ketone Shot is “Almost Yummy”, peachy 🍑 and ready to drink. Same molecule, three concentrations; concentration decides taste.

Is it a stimulant? Is there caffeine in it?

No and no. VKE is a superfood. No added caffeine or stimulants, and caffeine isn’t part of the recommended protocol. One study of this ester included a separate arm with caffeine added, which is why caffeine appears in our research summaries. If you also use caffeine, start with less than usual.

Can I compete on it?

Veech Ketone Ester is not listed on the current WADA Prohibited List, and riders on Tour de France teams – about as scrutinized as anti-doping gets – use it openly. Every KetoneAid batch is 3rd-party tested for WADA-prohibited substances. Still check your federation’s current rules; you’re responsible for what you take.

Is it dangerous?

VKE, no. It’s a superfood that provides D-BHB, the same ketone your liver makes, and it has been studied for safety in healthy adults; very large amounts and/or mixing with C8 MCT oil can upset your stomach. R 1,3-butanediol, sold in some other ketone drinks, is a different story: it’s inebriating – it can be. Do not ski impaired. Our sister brand sells it for this purpose: Real Buzz. No Booze.™ (not for focus+performance).

Which one should I get?

First time: Ketone Shot or Ke2. Ski trip: Ke4 is the most concentrated, so a week fits in a jacket pocket. All three are the same Veech Ketone Ester; concentration alone doesn’t set how much ester you take, how much you drink does.

What if I don’t feel a difference with VKE?

Follow our protocols. If you don’t feel it, reach out and we’ll help you hone in on how to use it for your specific case. If you’re still not satisfied, we offer a money-back guarantee.

One more lap.

MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE. TRY IT ON A GROOMER DAY FIRST, NOT ON A POWDER DAY.
